Forest Raised Pork

With very rare exception, nearly all pork sold in stores is produced in a confined animal feeding operation (CAFO). The animals live their lives on concrete. They are exclusively fed a formulated grain ration to maximize growth as well as produce uniformity in taste and texture. These factory production systems neglect the basic behaviors of the pig. Pigs are woodland dwellers by nature. If a group of domesticated pigs were released into a healthy forest ecosystem, they would survive on their own. At ZOE Farms, we harness these natural foraging skills by strategically designing wooded paddocks loaded with roots, tubers, grasses, legumes, insects, earthworms and a rich diversity of other natural food sources. We supplement with a non-GMO grain ration sourced from a local Amish mill. By allowing our pigs to find their own nutritional requirements, we have no use for medications or other chemicals to keep them alive. They do just fine on their own. This diversity in forage not only produces a happy, healthy pig; it also ensures a pork flavor that is second to none.
